Celebrating 160 Years of Magic: The Extraordinary Legacy of Beatrix Potter

This year marks an incredible milestone -160 years since Beatrix Potter was born in London on July 28, 1866. 

While most of the world knows her as the creator of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, we want to celebrate the whole woman. Beatrix Potter was a literary phenomenon, a self-taught scientist, a passionate conservationist, and in a fact very close to our hearts, a visionary businesswoman who practically invented modern character merchandising. 

More Than a Storyteller: A Woman Ahead of Her Time 

Beatrix Potter did not just write pretty stories; she revolutionised children’s literature. At a time when children's books were large, moralising, and stiff, Beatrix insisted that her books be made small, perfectly sized for little hands to hold. 

But her impact stretched far wider than the nursery bookshelf: 

• The Original Entrepreneur: Long before Disney or modern toy licensing, Beatrix independently designed and patented a Peter Rabbit doll in 1903. She understood that readers wanted to bring these characters into their homes and daily lives, paving the way for the beautiful giftware we create today. 

• The Mycology Pioneer: Prevented from studying formally because of her gender, she became an expert in fungi (mycology), producing incredibly accurate scientific illustrations and even writing a paper on spore germination. 

• The Guardian of the Lake District: Using the royalties from her books, Beatrix bought Hill Top Farm in Cumbria. She became a prize-winning sheep farmer and ultimately left over 4,000 acres of land and 15 farms to the National Trust, ensuring the beautiful landscapes that inspired her would remain untouched forever.

When our design team sits down to create a new collection, we feel a deep sense of stewardship. In a world full of fast trends and modern redesigns, we made a conscious choice to remain fiercely loyal to Beatrix’s original vision. For the past 39 years, every piece we develop has been anchored in that vision, the soft colour palettes, the mischievous glint in Peter's eye, and the timeless British countryside charm. We aren't just creating mugs, figurines, or keepsakes; we are preserving a piece of cultural history that has been loved for generations. 

This connection to her world isn’t just artistic for us, it’s geographic. Our design studio is located in Carlisle, sitting just a stone’s throw from the rolling hills and quiet waters of the Lake District. Working so close to the very landscapes that inspired Hill Top Farm, and the tales of Peter Rabbit and his mischievous friends gives our team a unique perspective. We look out at the same changing Cumbrian skies and misty mornings that Beatrix loved so dearly. It brings a profound sense of authenticity and local pride to everything we make. We aren’t just importing a license; we are breathing in the same fresh Northern air that inspired her genius. Every figurine, Money Bank and keepsake we produce is designed with that local love, ensuring that we pass a genuine piece of her beloved home on to yours.
